Pussen – A vibrant meeting place is taking shape
Akademiska Hus is transforming the southern university area at Luleå University of Technology into a more attractive, safe and health-promoting environment for activities and recreation. The project enhances the campus entrance and adds more sustainable and accessible meeting places for everyone who spends time there.

About the renovation
The focus is on creating a park that invites both relaxation and social activity – a place where everyone can gather and enjoy themselves all year round. The project, named Pussen after the existing pond in the area, is partly based on input from students and staff at Luleå University of Technology. Akademiska Hus is now integrating the park area as a natural part of the campus, where education, leisure, culture and working life come together. The development includes a new entrance square, improved walkways, new lighting, a wooden deck, additional barbecue and seating areas, a bridge, three wind shelters and new plantings.

The area supports biodiversity
The site is designed to promote biodiversity through the careful preservation of existing vegetation, complemented by the addition of carefully selected species tailored to the local conditions. In addition, ecological connectivity is improved through green corridors within the campus area. The wind shelters will be built in wood using techniques that combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design language. Wood brings warmth while also reinforcing the natural experience of the setting. The lighting will be atmospheric and contribute to a sense of safety all year round.
Akademiska Hus and Public Art Agency Sweden are collaborating with selected representatives from Luleå University of Technology on the artistic elements of the project. The aim is to create a vibrant and thought-provoking environment where art becomes a part of everyday life and the dynamic development of the campus.
